Q: How long is recovery after breast reduction surgery?
A: Most patients resume light activity within 2–3 weeks of breast reduction surgery and return to full activity by 6 weeks. Final results are visible at 3–6 months when swelling has fully resolved and scars have matured.
Days 1–3: Immediately After Surgery
You will wake up in a surgical support bra. Small drains may be placed to collect fluid — these are typically removed within 24–48 hours. Expect swelling, tightness, and mild-to-moderate discomfort managed with prescribed pain relief. A responsible adult must accompany you home. Rest is essential during this period.
Week 1–2
- First follow-up visit: drain removal, wound inspection, suture check
- Wear the compression or support bra continuously, day and night
- Avoid lifting anything heavier than 1–2 kg
- No baths or submerging the wound — gentle sponge baths only
- Sleep on your back with your head elevated
Week 3–4
- Most patients return to a desk job or work from home
- Swelling begins to reduce noticeably
- Short walks are encouraged to prevent deep vein thrombosis
- Continue avoiding heavy lifting and overhead arm movements
Week 5–6
- Gradual return to light exercise such as walking and yoga
- Scars begin to flatten and lighten in colour
- Continue wearing a sports bra or non-underwired bra for 3 months
Month 3–6: Final Results
Residual swelling resolves completely. Scars continue to mature — they are initially pink and may feel firm, but soften and fade with time. Silicone scar gels or silicone sheets can be started at 6 weeks to accelerate fading.
Post-Operative Do's and Don'ts
| Do | Don't |
| Wear support bra as directed | Sleep on your stomach |
| Attend all follow-up appointments | Expose scars to direct sunlight for 6 months |
| Keep wounds clean and dry | Smoke — this significantly delays healing |
| Take all prescribed medications | Skip the compression garment |
| Apply scar gel from 6 weeks onward | Lift heavy objects or children until cleared |
When to Contact Your Surgeon
- Increasing redness, warmth, or swelling in one breast
- Fever above 38°C
- Wound opening or unusual discharge
- Unusual asymmetry developing after initial recovery
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: When can I drive after breast reduction?
A: Most patients can resume driving once they are off strong pain medications and can perform emergency manoeuvres comfortably — usually around 2 weeks post-surgery.
Q: When will my scars fade?
A: Scars are typically pink and firm in the first few months but continue to improve for 12–18 months. Silicone sheeting, scar massage, and sun protection all accelerate the fading process.
